The power of the church and crusaders

Church Reform and the Crusades Section 1 
A. Perceiving Cause and Effect As you read about reforms in the Catholic Church and the Crusades, note one or more reasons for each of the following developments. 
1. The Benedictine monastery was founded at Cluny. 
  • reformers wanted to go back to the origional principles of the Christian religion
2. The power of the pope was extended. 
  • The crusades were about the religion
3. Nearly 500 Gothic cathedrals were built and Count of Flanders for help. 
  • elements were meant to inspire the worshiper with the magnificence of God.

4. The Byzantine emperor appealed for the decoration between 1170 and 1270.
  • Wanted Christians to stop Muslim attacks
5. Pope Urban II issued a call for a Crusade. 
  • the pope wanted to reclaim Palestine and reunite Christendom

6. There was an outpouring of support for the First Crusade. 
  • Those who died on Crusade were assured of a place in heaven.
          7. Four feudal Crusader states were formed, though each ruled by a European noble
  • Nobles had many arguments among each other and couldn’t come to an agreement on a leader
8. Jerusalem remained under Muslim control, unarmed Christian pilgrims could visit the city’s holy places. 
  • The crusades ended in a treaty
9. In Spain, Isabella and Ferdinand used the Inquisition to suppress heretics.
  • To increase power and unify their country with Christianity
10. European kings strengthened their own power as a result of the Crusades. 
  • A truce was made that anyone could visit the holy Land 
B. Recognizing Facts and Details On the back of this paper, identify each of the 
following: 
St. Francis of Assisi- an Italian, founded another order of friars, the Franciscans.
Saladin- Kurdish warrior and Muslim leader
Richard the Lion-hearted-
Reconquista- a long effort by the Spanish to drive the Muslims out of Spain.
Inquisition- a court held by the Church to suppress heresy.

TERMS & NAMES 1. For each term or name, write a sentence explaining its significance.

• Saladin- Kurdish warrior and Muslim leader
• Richard the Lion-Hearted- English king one of three of
Europe’s most powerful monarchs
• Reconquista- a long effort by the Spanish to drive the Muslims out of Spain.
• Inquisition- a court held by the Church to suppress heresy.

2. Which of the events of the Age of Faith do you think was most important to the Church? Explain.
The crusades because they were Holy Wars.
